About Lalibela

Lalibela is a town in northern Ethiopia famous for its rock-cut monolithic churches. Located in the Amhara Region, it's a significant site of Ethiopian Christianity and a place of pilgrimage.

The churches were commissioned by King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela in the 12th century, with the goal of creating a New Jerusalem for those who could not make the pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

These remarkable structures were carved directly into the rock, both inside and out, and remain active places of worship today. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978.
